Nintendo slashes 3DS Price by 40% in Japan

Nintendo announced today that the suggested retail price for the Nintendo 3DS gets slashed from 25,000 Yen (~$321) to 15,000 Yen (~$192) starting on August 11 in Japan. This is a huge cut of 40% bringing the price of the 3DS down under $200 in Japan. Right now the 3DS sells for $249.99 in the United States. A 40% price cut would bring the price down to $150. This is the current price of the Nintendo DSi.

It is not known if Nintendo is extending the price cut for the 3DS also to other markets. This is the biggest price cut Nintendo ever did in such a short time after launch of a new console. Nintendo is aware that early adopters of the 3DS are disappointed that they had to pay 40% more for the 3DS just less than 6 month ago. Nintendo is offering current 3DS customers free virtual consoel NES titles under the Nintendo Ambassador Program.

Nintendo also promises hot special 3DS titles for this fall including Mario Kart 7 and 3D Super Mario Land.

Clearly the 3DS is off to a pumpy start. Question is if it ever will take over the lead in the Nintendo DS series or if 3D is a dead end here. The 3DS price slashing comes on the heals of losses Nintendo just announced today. In the last quarter Nintendo lost about $325m. Nintendo also cut the previous outlook buy over 80%.

Update:
Nintendo will cut the price of the 3DS also in the United States from $249.99 to $169.99 starting August 12. If you want the new 3DS wait until August 12 to save a bundle.
